All you need to know about Magnetic phone Chargers

by Raidah Hasan

Technical Article

If you’ve heard of the physics behind electromagnetism, magnetic chargers and their inner workings would be quite simple for you to grasp. The chargers have electric coils inside and so do the newest iPhones, the magnets in both ensure the phone and chargers’ coils align up accurately touching each other.

The coils in charger have an alternating current flow through them, which causes an alternating magnetic field in the coil, the charging coil’s magnetic field in contact with the phone’s coil induces an alternating magnetic field in the phone coil, which causes an alternating current in the phone coil too. The whole magnetic field causing current and vice versa is due to a phenomenon enabling electromagnetism and is studied sincerely in physics and engineering.

Basically this enables us to charge our phones without the constraints of annoying wires which get tangled, worn out, old, misplaced and the list of inconveniences goes on. The only thing not so convenient about these magnetic chargers though is their pricing compared to regular cables, especially because every once in a while the charger itself needs charging, when we again have to resort to the mighty old fashioned cable and adapter to charge it, just like phones.

For some such a charger is a worthy investment, especially if they’re traveling regularly. However, is the privilege of this magnetic charging technology only available for the iPhone users? Might surprise you to learn that’s not the case. Any other phone as long as it supports Qi wireless charging (global standard for wireless charging adopted by most named companies) can ideally work with the Apple’s MagSafe chargers, though the magnetic snap on feature is only possible with iPhones due to targeted design.

Android users can also use third party magnetic chargers, which may not be Apple but can still enable this charging method. Though their charging speed and quality may not be as desired unless the third party organization is reliable.
