Tell me about "Arduinos"

Technical Article

I’m sure at a certain point of their lives anyone heavily interested in tech, especially engineering and coding, has stumbled across the term “arduino”. If you haven’t yet, allow this article to be your first intro to knowing the infamous Arduino.

Invented by an Italian company called Arduino, the “arduino” is a device that aids young inventors in DIY robotics projects. This device is basically a circuit board with a microcontroller chip which acts as its brain. A beginner friendly software launched by the parent company, allows people to program the arduino board to function in certain ways. The board has pins to insert wires and other elements like motors and sensors, allowing a very diverse range of projects to be made using this.

While it may sound like a kid’s toy, almost every engineering student, especially people majoring in electrical engineering, inevitably encounter the Arduino. The device is designed to be beginner friendly so almost every non coder's entry to the world of robotics and building starts with using an Arduino board.

The software used for Arduinos is called Arduino IDE where the instructions for the board are coded. It is a free software that can be downloaded on computers and the Arduino boards come with a wire and USB port to connect the board with your computer or laptop.

There are many third party companies that sell similar and often identical Arduino boards, they are all still compatible with the software, though certain variants may have difficulty being recognized in certain computers or laptops. This depends entirely on the model and quality of both the Arduino and the computer it’s being used with.

The best part about Arduino and the reason why it’s so popular, is its user and beginner friendly instructions. There are countless different tutorials on various social media apps and streaming sites making this type of coding knowledge accessible to all.

While you might still have many questions unanswered by the end of this article, I assure you this is only the beginning. A whole new world of questions, ideas and experiences await behind the door labeled “Arduino” on top, all you have to do is swing it open. Start a project no matter how simple and let yourself discover your own creative abilities, that you’ve left untouched for so long.
