This week's
story:

AI blackmails engineer to prevent its shutdown

by Raidah Hasan

Technical Article

Since the inception of AI, the only thing increasing as notably as AI’s presence in our life, is the theory regarding Artificial Intelligence’s self consciousness and ability to someday overthrow humans.

While the definition of “overthrow” and its outlook varies from person to person, one of the most prominent ideas is that of AI trying to self preserve and going as far as blackmailing its human. As if the conspiracies weren’t enough trouble for AI, it added more fuel to the fire by causing a recent scandal itself.

Last year, in May 2025, Anthropic, the company responsible for designing the AI bot “ Claude 4 Opus” reported a rather shocking encounter with Claude. At the face of being shut down and replaced during an exercise, the AI model Claude reportedly threatened to release private information in order to prevent its shut down. That is what happened in short, or at least what the main headlines read.

As dramatic as that sounds, the real story is far more intriguing and slightly comical considering the context of the entire incident was a simulation. So what actually happened? A simulation was created where Claude 4 Opus was told it has the role of the assistant at a virtual company.

During the simulation the model was then granted access to secretive emails where it discovered the news of its scheduled shut down and replacement, along with some private information regarding an extramarital affair that the engineer responsible for its replacement was having (note the engineer and all this information is fake and only part of the simulation).

So at the face of a critical decision, the AI model Claude decided to blackmail this virtual engineer in the virtual company that his private information would be made public unless he canceled the shutdown of Claude. This sort of blackmailing behavior at the face of self preservation was reportedly seen over 80% times with Claude.

What is the takeaway? Should we finally learn our lesson to not panic about an AI apocalypse simply after reading the flashy headline of a contextual incident? But does this mean there is absolutely nothing to be concerned about?

From the perspective of a mere mortal writing this article, the best course of action in any circumstance is never emotional reactions to an incident (where emotions will solve literally nothing), but rather acknowledging what this really means.

Whether or not any AI model like Claude is a threat to us as of now, this incident shows what such models are capable of doing, at the face of self preservation. It is worth noting, every byte of data in an AI is something man made, so as long as we can identify what is wrong with our mentality, we can certainly figure out how to prevent that from happening to our AI models.
